Reason Behind the Alias:
Checotah, OK, is the town where my mother was born. It
was named after Samuel Checote, a Creek Indian who served in
the Confederate Army, being eventually promoted to
Lieutenant Colonel. He went on to serve two terms as Chief
of the Creek Nation, and was known as the "Great Chief" for
his leadership and efforts to keep the Lower and Upper
tribes from splitting apart."
History of the
Persona:
Checotah was born about 1840, in eastern Oklahoma.
When he was about five, his family joined a wagon train headin' west along
the Orygun Trail. His father was killed in an Indian attack in Nebraska, and
his mother and sister died in Wyoming of a cholera outbreak. He was adopted
by one of the surviving families, and ended up in Orygun with them when they
settled there. His restless streak made him leave his adopted family when he
was about 12, turning to doing odd jobs, mostly cowboying for smaller
ranches in Orygun, Idaho, and Colorado. He joined the Confederate army when
the War Between the States escalated. He felt strongly about States Rights,
and didn't like the politicians in Washington running everything. He was
wounded at Shiloh, and woke up in a Union Army field hospital. They mistook
him for a Union Officer because of his western accent when they asked him
about his rank, and the fact that he was wearing his cavalry boots and
officer's pants, but his shirt and jacket had been torn off during the
battle. After he recuperated enough to walk, he found himself issued a
Union Captain's uniform, and assigned to a Cavalry detachment being sent
West. He spent a couple of years in the Arizona Territory, mustered out, and
returned to his drifting ways. He spent some time as a lawman, some time
riding the "other side", but mostly found himself punching cows more often
than not.
